In December of 2017 the Alert Fire Co. No. 1 received a $5000.00 grant from the Firemens’ Association of the State of Pennsylvania. This grant funding was generated from FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) for the 2017 SAFER (Staffing For Adequate Fire & Emergency Response) that can only be utilized for Recruitment and Retention activities for the awarded emergency services organization.
Our Recruitment and Retention Committee at Alert has been working diligently to create a new member recruitment plan and then getting out and speaking with the public at community events and after emergency responses. During 2017 and in the past, our committee attended these events with very few recruitment items to give to the public. Several years ago, we created a tri-fold brochure, printed them ourselves and set-out to show-off our equipment and describe to our neighbors the opportunities that we provide to them. While this approach has been effective in gaining a few new members, we felt the need to be more creative with our program!
The committee agreed that we need to be out in the public speaking face to face with our potential new members. While our social media and website are good resources for information, we standardized on an Alert recruitment brand and purchased items that most of our residents will see on a daily basis with our grant funds. We identified the most traveled spots in our first-due area of the Borough of Downingtown and East Caln Township as diners, restaurants, micro-breweries and grocery stores.
We purchased over the winter, with our grant funds, logo brand coffee mugs that are being distributed at our local diners; pint-glasses and coasters for restaurants and micro-breweries plus reusable shopping tote bags that can be used in grocery stores. The other items that we purchased with the funds such as a pull-up sign and table cloth will help us with presentations at our open house and community events. Additionally, we created a QR Code that will take you to our Become A Member page on our website. This QR Code can be seen on our new post cards that are on the counter-tops of many stores and restaurants through out our community. We created business cards that are in each of our apparatus that we have handed-out to captive audiences at emergency scenes.
Our hope, with our current Recruiting Campaign is that people see our Alert logo asking the public to join our team, as they are drinking coffee, eating at a restaurant or shopping locally. If you have ever considered volunteering, either on front lines or administratively, in an organization that has been around for 131 years and serving our community, please consider joining the Alert Fire Co. No. 1 today.
Please look for us and visit with us when we are out-and-about. We are scheduled to be at the Chester County Mac & Cheese Cook-Off on June 10, 2018 and Good Neighbor Day on July 4, 2018, both in Kerr Park, Downingtown. We are also planning to be at some additional events this year.
