At 3:17 PM, the Downingtown Fire Dept. was dispatched to an auto accident on the Rt. 30 Bypass, east bound, just west of the Rt. 282 on-ramp, in Downingtown Borough. In addition, Rescue 38 (Thorndale Fire Co.) and Engine 76 (Coatesvile VA) responded since they were already on the Rt. 30 Bypass at another accident, approximately one mile to the west.
Battalion 46 (Brooks), on Engine 46-2 and MICU-46 (Minquas Fire Co. No. 2) arrived to find a tractor trailer vs. an auto across both lanes of the Bypass, on the bridge over Norward Rd. There were no injures to those involved in the accident, however there was approximately 75 gallons of diesel fuel and transmission fluid spilled onto the roadway.
Battalion 46 requested Haz Mat 15 (Chester County Dept. of Emergency Services) to the scene to assist. Brush 45 (Firefighter McCarraher), Squad 45 (Lt. Follett) and Rescue 45 (Ass’t. Chief Wesson) responded and assisted with deploying 17 bags of speedy-dry to contain the fuel spill on the road surface. A vac type of truck from US Environmental of Downingtown assisted with the final clean up.
Due to this accident taking place during rush-our, Fire Police from the DFD, Thorndale Fire Co., Lionville Fire Co., Wagonown Fire Co., Keystone Valley Fire Dept. and Modena Fire Co. assisted with traffic control on the Rt. 30 Bypass at the Rt. 322, Rt. 340 and Reeceville Rd. Exits. After operating at the scene for 5-1/2 hours all DFD units and Fire Police returned to station just after 8:30 PM.
