Alert Fire Co. No. 1

TBT - 48 Years ago, on February 5, 1973, the Downingtown Fire Dept. were dispatched at approximately 3:45 AM to train accident on the main line of the Penn Central Railroad.

The volunteers arrived on location, to find 21 freight cars of a 118 car freight train derailed on the bridge over the Brandywine Creek. It appeared that some of the freight cars were on fire, however, after further investigation it was determined that tank cars carrying sulfuric and nitric acid were leaking and created a cloud.

Mutual aid companies and the Downingtown Police Department assisted with evacuation of over 1500 Downingtown residents during this accident.

This incident made national news with an AP article in several newspapers across the United States.

In the 60s & 70s the fire co. Responded to numerous train wrecks in Downingtown area. Finally they replaced/repaired the ties & missing spikes and also slowed down the speed of the trains

Remember it well. Took family to aunts house in Coatesville, then came back to work with the fire company

I will always remember this day as we were awoken from our beds to get up and go to my aunt's house to avoid the fumes.

I remember that morning well !

Yep I remember that...

I remember listing to it. It was hard to hear, everything was on Low Band, 33.90 - 33.86 except for D-Town’s Highband. Was a few years to young yet to join 1st WC yet. How long were you guys on scene?
