At 7:57 PM, the Downingtown Fire Dept., with the additional first alarm assignment of Ladder 6, Rescue 6, Engines 6-1 and 6-2 (West Whiteland Fire Company), Tower 47 and Engine 47-2 (Lionville Fire Company), Engine and Rescue 38 (Thorndale Fire Company), Engine 39-1, Tanker and Rescue 39 (West Bradford Fire Company) and Engines 51-1 and 51-2 (First West Chester Fire Co., Engine Co. 51) as the RIT for a building fire at Champion Recycling in the 500 block of Trestle Place in East Caln Twp.
The Downingtown Police Department and Ass’t. Chief 45 (J. Trego) arrived to find smoke showing from the front of the building. Tower 45 (Capt. McCarraher) arrived and the crew used the HURST Jaws of Life eDRAULIC combi tool for forcible entry of the locked gate. Engine 46-2 laid a 5″ supply line from a nearby hydrant.
The crew from Tower 45 split into two teams and went to the roof for ventilation and the other went inside to assist the crew of Engine 46-2 with finding the seat of the fire. The team from Engine 45 (Past Chief J. Keen) assisted with fire attack and overhaul. The interior crews found a building construction waste fire that was located inside of the building.
The mutual aid companies assisted with fire attack and ventilation. A second alarm (Honey Brook Fire Company, Modena Fire Company, East Brandywine Fire Company and East Whiteland Fire Company) was struck for additional manpower to relieve the first due companies with overhaul.
The DFD apparatus returned to station at 10:30 PM.
